Character Creation:

In a pirate-themed murder mystery, a group of privateers or swashbucklers would make suitable heroes for the adventure. These characters are typically daring and resourceful, with a mix of combat skills, cunning, and charisma that allow them to succeed in dangerous situations. Other character types that could fit well into this scenario include sailors, bounty hunters, smugglers, or investigators. Players could also choose to play characters with specific specialties, such as medical expertise, lock-picking skills, or knowledge of arcane lore. The important thing is that each character brings something unique to the table and is motivated to solve the crime and uncover the truth.

  1. Character Creation: Players can create their own pirate characters and determine their stats, abilities, and skills.

  2. Dice Mechanics: Opposing rolls of two six-sided dice are used to perform any tasks required in the adventure. The player rolls 2D6, while the DM rolls 2D6 to determine the outcome of the task.

  3. Pip System: Players can gain advantages with their rolls by adding pips. Pips can be added by way of tools, trinkets, character creation stats and roleplay. The DM will determine the number of pips added to the player's roll.

  4. Task Resolution: If a player's roll plus the pips is greater than the DM's roll, the task is successful. If the DM's roll is greater, the task is unsuccessful.

  5. Roleplay: Roleplay is encouraged in the adventure and can impact the outcome of tasks. The DM will take into account the player's roleplay when determining the number of pips added to the roll.

  6. Consequences: If the murderer is not found, the player characters may face severe consequences such as imprisonment or death.

  7. Adventure Structure: The murder will take place in a tavern and there will be at least four suspects. The player characters are privateers and will be tasked with solving the murder mystery.

  8. Encounter Resolution: Encounters in the adventure will be resolved through the dice mechanics described above. The DM will provide the opposing roll for any tasks that require it.

  9. Loot and Rewards: Players can find and collect loot and rewards throughout the adventure. These items can be used to help resolve tasks and add pips to the player's rolls.

These rules provide the basic structure for the pirate-themed murder mystery RPG adventure. The DM can make modifications to the rules as needed to fit the needs of the specific game.

Each Player will Roll a 1D6 three times to determine their Weapon, Tool and Trinket.

  1. Cutlass - A curved, single-edged sword that is ideal for close-quarters combat.

The players, who are privateers, receive a message from the local governor of a pirate-infested island, asking them to come to the island's tavern to help solve a murder. The governor explains that one of the island's most notorious pirates, Captain Crippler, was found dead in the tavern, and the governor fears that if the murderer is not found, the other pirates will turn on the island's population and wreak havoc.

When the players arrive at the tavern, they find four suspects:

The tavern owner - a gruff, no-nonsense man who had a heated argument with Captain Crippler the night before.

He isn't happy about Privateers snooping around his establishment.

He claims that he was away from the tavern when the murder happened but, the barkeep says otherwise.

The barkeep - a sly and shifty individual who has been known to tamper with drinks to get what she wants.

She was previously in a relationship with Captain Crippler. She claims they split on good terms. Other people say different things. Some claim she was upset because she found out he had an affair.

A former crew member of Captain Crippler - a bitter and angry man who claims that Crippler had betrayed him and left him for dead on a previous adventure.

A rival pirate captain - a cunning and ruthless individual who had been known to have a long-standing grudge against Captain Crippler.

The players must gather evidence, question the suspects, and use their wit and skills to determine who the murderer is. If they fail to solve the murder, the governor will be forced to turn them over to the pirates, who will not be kind to outsiders interfering in their affairs.

As the players delve deeper into the mystery, they will uncover secrets and motives that will help them piece together what really happened in the tavern that night. And if they're lucky, they may just walk away with a bounty for solving the murder.

The hook for this encounter could be that one of the player characters has a personal connection to the victim and is seeking justice, or they may receive a reward for solving the murder, or it could be that the murderer is wanted for crimes against the player characters and they have a personal vendetta against them. Additionally, the fact that the murder took place in a public place could make it a matter of reputation for the player characters as privateers to solve the crime and maintain law and order in their community. The possibility of grave consequences if the murderer is not found could add an extra level of urgency and stakes to the encounter.
